Nuri Family

Words are powerful. Tell a flower “I love you” and it grows. “I hate you,” it shrivels (see IKEA experiment)It’s the same with people. Negative words break someone while positive words make someone. Today, too many negative words are shared. Especially with social media and its anonymity, more than ever we see negative words plague interactions rather than encouragement.My Co-Founder Matthew and I set out to create Nuri, an app designed to combat negativity and foster positivity in our everyday lives. Nuri began as a platform for sharing compliments with the hope of healing the emotional scars caused by negative words. Named after our fluffy, cheerful bichon frise, the app embodies the same joy and optimism that Nuri brings to the real world. With Nuri, users can:
  • Schedule daily affirmations, like "You can do it!", to pop up as reminders.
  • Speak affirmations aloud to reinforce positivity and self-belief.
  • Send heartfelt compliments to friends, making connections more meaningful and uplifting.

After testing the app with ~50 college students, we discovered that while users loved receiving compliments, they often found it challenging to craft genuine praises for others. This insight led us to pivot towards affirmations and reimagine Nuri as a nurturing, interactive experience. At the heart of the revamped Nuri Family app is your very own animated bichon frise, Nuri, who grows and thrives as you engage with the app. Features include:
  • Voice-Activated Affirmations: Each time you say an affirmation aloud, you earn "Zoomies," which can be used to purchase virtual gifts for friends, spreading even more positivity.
  • Therapeutic Chatbot: Built with OpenAI's GPT APIs, Nuri acts as a compassionate, fluffy companion, allowing users to open up about their challenges in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Cross-Platform Accessibility: Rebuilt with React Native with fresh new design, the app now supports both iOS and Android, ensuring a wider audience can join the Nuri family.
To reinforce the brand's happy, carefree image, I built an animated Nuri Family webpage where Nuris float and fall gracefully through the sky. This playful experience was crafted with React, GSAP, and hosted on AWS.
